Boys accused in bike path shootings

11-year-olds allegedly fired airsoft guns at passersby

Two Blaine County 11-year-old boys might be in trouble with the law for allegedly firing airsoft guns at people using the Wood River Trail bike path north of Hailey.

The Blaine County Sheriff's Office investigated the seemingly random shootings after receiving a complaint in the Cloverly Lane area on the afternoon of Monday, Sept. 13.

Sheriff's Lt. Jay Davis said the boys are accused of "shooting at people going by on the bike path." At least one woman was struck by a plastic BB fired from one of the guns.

Davis said Monday that it hasn't been determined if the boys will be charged with a crime, though information from the investigation has been forwarded to the Blaine County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.

"The parents and victims have discussed it, but we don't know if it's going to be pursued," Davis said.

Airsoft guns are replicas of real firearms that use compressed air or springs to shoot plastic pellets or BBs.

Davis said the sheriff's office and other police agencies commonly use airsoft guns in training exercises.

"You can feel it if you get hit, but they don't hit hard enough to leave a bruise," Davis said. "I guess if you had it pumped up enough it would sting a little."
