Cutthroat, WRHS girls post shutouts on soccer pitch

Cutthroat soccer midway through a busy week

Saturday's non-league soccer games against Twin Falls sent The Community School boys and girls into a busy week of High Desert Soccer Conference road games against Wendell, Declo and Bliss.

The visiting 3A Cutthroat girls fell to 4A Twin Falls 3-1 Saturday, as senior Freya Dickey scored for Sun Valley on a beautiful header off a corner kick by Jordan Fitzgerald.

Katie Feldman played an exceptional game at center back. Strong performances against an excellent soccer squad also came from Daniela Stokes and keeper Ella Marks.

Coach Kelly Feldman's Cutthroat girls did a better job against Twin Falls compared to their 6-0 home loss Aug. 21. They still came up short against a Bruins team (9-1-0, 48-8 goals against) that leads the Great Basin Conference and has won six consecutive games.

The Cutthroat boys hosted Twin Falls Saturday and lost 7-0, with former Wood River High star Chris DeLaCruz scoring three goals for the Bruins.

"Man of the Match" for the Cutthroat boys was Colin Waycott. And junior goalkeeper Tom Crosby had 23 saves.

Monday, the Cutthroat girls (9-2-0, 8-0-0 league) got back on the winning track with a 6-0 victory at Wendell and hiked their road record to 4-1-0.

Katie Feldman broke the ice 38 minutes into the first half for a 1-0 Cutthroat halftime lead, then junior Hailey Rheinschild punched home two goals early in the second half. Other scorers were two goals from Hannah Dies (13 season), one from Ellie Swanson (19 season) and one assist by Fitzgerald.

Coach Richard Whitelaw's Cutthroat boys (4-5-1, 3-4-1 league) lost 6-0 to the Wendell Trojans (8-1-0, 8-0-0 league). The Trojans are unbeaten in High Desert play and have handled reigning State 3A champion Gooding twice, including 3-2 last Wednesday in Gooding.

Whitelaw's "Man of the Match" was Tony Martin.

The Cutthroat teams play today, Wednesday at Declo and Friday at Bliss and then have 10 days off for school outings.

Hailey girls outscore Jerome 11-0

With the Great Basin Conference regular-season race in its final two weeks, the Wood River High School girls' soccer team headed out onto the road this week to play Canyon Ridge of Twin Falls and Burley.

Wood River (6-2-1, 5-1-0 league) swept its season series with Jerome 11-0 Thursday in Hailey and isn't expected to have much trouble with the Riverhawks or Bobcats. Hailey has a rematch with league-leading Twin Falls Sept. 28.

But it's likely that Twin Falls (9-1-0, 5-0-0 league), whether it loses or ties its game on the Hailey pitch Tuesday, will carry the top seed into the six-team GBC tourney Oct. 7.

That's because, in the tiebreaker format that begins with head-to-head results, the next stop is common foes. Twin Falls has beaten Century of Pocatello 1-0 and Wood River tied Century 1-1. Both teams have lost to Highland.

Wood River got three-goal hat tricks from senior Tanner Dredge (12 goals season, 98 career) and sophomore McKenna Chase (9 goals) in Thursday's win over Jerome. Other scorers were Sloan Storey, Nicole Roos, Teagen Palmer and Madison Gove, plus an own goal.

Assists went to K.T. Martinez, Chase, Lucy Paisley, Palmdr, Storey, Dredge and Grace Eagan.

Chase opened the scoring 37 seconds into the game on a feed from Martinez and added a second goal at 13 minutes. Chase's hat trick came early in the second half, from Storey.

Dredge tallied her goals at 16 minutes, from Chase, and 23 minutes, from Paisley, and tapped home her hat trick on a lovely cross from the right wing by Eagan at 56 minutes.

Senior Jessica Martens, who suffered a broken leg in the 3-1 loss at Twin Falls Sept. 9, had surgery Wednesday and was back on the Wolverine bench rooting for her teammates during Thursday's game.

Wood River's games on Burley's turf football field Thursday, Sept. 23 will start with the junior varsity at 4:30 p.m. followed by the varsity 6:15 p.m.
