Panthers to meet Panthers in clash of unbeatens

Nevada powerhouse visits Carey Friday

Mirror images of each other, two of the top eight-man prep football teams in Idaho and Nevada will clash for the first time Friday, Sept. 24 in Carey.

The Carey High School Panthers (4-0, averaging 48.0 points per game) will entertain the Pahranagat Valley (Nev.) Panthers (3-0, 44.7 ppg) from Alamo 99 miles north of Las Vegas.

Game time is 7 p.m. at Derrick Parke Memorial Field.

Not only are the schools identical in their mascots, their colors are blue-and-gold—and of course both are unbeaten.

Carey coach Lane Kirkland said, "Pahranagat Valley has 18 kids, lots of offensive weapons, a great passing game and a smart quarterback. They are very disciplined. It will be good for us to see what we're made of, and both teams are looking for a very competitive game."

Road warrior Pahranagat Valley, coached by Ken Higbee, has won 52-8 at Challis, 54-0 at Avalon (Ca.) and 28-20 at home last Friday over last year's California state finalist Joshua Springs from Yucca Valley.

They'll be going against a Carey team that has tremendous depth—16 different players have scored points as Carey has out-pointed foes 192-12.

"Eighteen kids had tackles in our Homecoming game last Friday against Camas County," said Kirkland. "There was an opportunity for every kid to get playing time before the game ended at halftime."

Carey tallied five touchdowns and 34 points in the first quarter Friday en route to a 46-0 mercy-rule Homecoming victory over the Camas County Mushers (2-2).

Leading scorer Tim Hoopes (46 points) scored the first touchdown on a three-yard run and tossed a 19-yard scoring pass to Caleb Cenarrusa (2 TDs). Scoring their first TDs were Austin Hennefer, Baley Barg and Tori Alvarez. Brandon Dilworth had his second.

Hoopes (4 carries, 63 yards) paced Carey's 191-yard rushing attack and added a 64-yard punt return. Carey out-gained Camas 268-88 in total yards. Senior captain Blair Peck led the Panther defense and averaged 44 yards on five kickoffs.

Carey's Homecoming royalty featured queen Danielle Hennefer, junior Erika Zarate, sophomore Morgan Parke and fresman Daphne Kirkland.
