Golf finals staged at Bigwood, Valley Club

Fall swings on local courses


It was a busy week at local golf courses, including Ketchum's Bigwood Golf Course at Thunder Spring where Shawn Aicher won the Men's Championship Flight of the 2010 Bigwood Open Sunday.

Women's club champion was Jennie Williams. Top results among the 29 participants:

Men's Championship Flight: 1st gross—Shawn Aicher 74-71 for 145. 2nd gross—Shaun Murray 72-74 for 146. 3rd gross—Chase Baker 79-74 for 153.

1st net—Chris Abbott 75-83 for 158-140. 2nd net—Ron Miller 81-82 for 163-147. 3rd net—Gardiner Young 75-82 for 157-149.

Women: 1—Jennie Williams 92-95 for 187. 2—Jackie Dameral 96-101 for 197.

Men's First Flight: 1st gross—Mike Beck 77-83 for 160. 2nd gross—Ken Ward 85-85 for 170. 3rd gross—Bob Williams 89-85 for 174.

1st net—Gene Korby 81-84 for 165-141. 2nd net—Brandon Hughes 78-96 for 174-144. 3rd net—Francis Gilbo 94-92 for 186-146.

Meanwhile, at The Valley Club, Neil Bradshaw captured his third Men's Club match-play championship 2-up over Latham Williams Sunday. Bradshaw, 2007-08 men's king, survived five rounds of match play and edged Williams on the 18th hole of their finals match.

Defending champion Carmen Bradley went out in the semi-finals, bowing to Bradshaw. Williams defeated Jack Dies 1-up on the 19th hole in the other semi-final match. The club has crowned a men's champ every year since 1996.

Quarterfinalists in the 20-player bracket were Baird Gourlay, Dave Cropper, John Baker and Mark Meisenbach.

Also, Elkhorn Golf Club held its 2010 Club Championship on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 2-3. Club gross champions were Dave Hausmann 77-70 for 147 and Kitty Willard 74-76 for 150.

Seniors and Super Seniors

Despite one day of frost delay and another day of cool and cloudy conditions, The Valley Club wrapped up its Senior (ages 55-69 men and 50-69 women) and Super Senior (70-plus) Championships Sept. 7-8.

Gross stroke champions were 2005 winner Jim Holman, Lou Mace, former champion Marilyn Celano and Claire Bailey. Results follow for top gross and net golfers:

Men's Senior: 1st gross—Jim Holman 75-80 for 155. 2nd gross—Mitch August 83-76 for 159. 3rd gross (tie)—Dave Cropper 83-83 for 166 and Larry Lloyd 85-81 for 166. 1st net—Paul Willis 68-68 for 136. 2nd net—Dick Shelton 70-73 for 143. 3rd net (tie)—Dave Berman 70-75 for 145 and Kim Ingham 75-70 for 145.

Men's Super Senior: 1st gross—Lou Mace 82-80 for 162. 2nd gross—Steve Malkmus 72-72 for 144. 3rd gross (tie)—Jerry Boas 89-80 for 169 and Dick Toomey 90-79 for 169.

1st net—Bill Hill 70-70 for 140. 2nd net—Paul Hansen 74-69 for 143. 3rd net—Edward Karner 75-70 for 145.

Women's Senior: 1st gross—Marilyn Celano 87-82 for 169. 2nd gross—Sue Woodyard 88-89 for 177. 3rd gross—Kristin O'Reilly 91-87 for 178.

1st net—Barbara Shelton 71-66 for 137. 2nd net—Patti Harris 67-73 for 140. 3rd net—Kristy Pigeon 68-75 for 143.

Women's Super Senior: 1st gross—Claire Bailey 100-99 for 199. 1st net (tie)—Bev Jaeger 76-79 for 155 and Carol Karner 77-78 for 155.
