WRHS spikers take care of Burley in Basin match

First conference win for Wolverines

Coach Tim Richards told his Wood River High School varsity volleyball players after Tuesday's home match that they needed to improve their consistency and execution and crank up their hitting.

The visiting Burley Bobcats probably thought Wood River was consistent enough, particularly senior middle blocker Jade Glenn, by the time the Great Basin Conference match ended at the Hailey gym.

Glenn (9 kills, 5 blocks) came up with big plays at the net just about every time Wood River needed them, and the Wolverines waltzed away with their first conference win of the 2010 season 25-23, 25-12, 25-19.

Another shining star for Hailey was sophomore Kori Paradis, who doused any Burley hopes of a comeback in the second game by serving 12 consecutive winners—helped at the net by kills by Glenn, senior Ali Levy (4 kills) and senior setter/hitter Jessica Hamilton (4 kills, 19 assists).

Paradis finished the match with five aces, four coming in the second game when her serve baffled Burley.

Burley (1-5, 0-1 league) had its best chance in the close first game, battling back to assume a 23-22 lead. That's when 6-0 Glenn made a crucial block on Levy's serve, and Burley fouled at the net with Glenn lurking for yet another block.

The home team led only 19-18 in the third game of the best-of-five when senior Allie Hesteness and soph Lily Richards (3 aces) crunched back-to-back kills on Miranda Gasenica's serve. Winners at the net by Glenn, Hunter Thompson and Richards finished out the sweep.

Wood River visited Canyon Ridge Thursday in Twin Falls. The Wolverines return to Twin Falls Tuesday to play the Bruins. The WRHS junior varsity tourney is Saturday, Sept. 11 at 8:30 a.m. at the Hailey gym.

In other news, Wood River athletic director John Rade announced Wednesday that match times and court use have changed for the final four home Great Basin dual matches Sept. 23 and 28 and Oct. 7 and 12.

Only one net will be used instead of the downstairs and upstairs arrangement at the Hailey gym—so the freshmen will start at 4:30 p.m. followed by junior varsity about 6 p.m. and varsity about 7:30 p.m.
