Quick Response Pays Off

Firefighters from Hailey, Bellevue and Wood River Fire & Rescue quickly knocked down a fire Tuesday night in a garage at 521 Angela Drive in Hailey, the home of Edwin and Shanon Christensen. Hailey Fire Chief Mike Chapman said the homeowners called 911 and crews were dispatched just before midnight. The fire was suppressed in a few minutes but some firefighters remained on scene until about 4 a.m., he said. The next morning, smoldering insulation prompted firefighters to return. Fire damage was mainly contained to the garage but smoke damage had likely occurred throughout the house, the chief said. The company that insures the house is investigating the cause. Chapman said his department's initial investigation indicated the blaze was likely the result of a linseed-oil-soaked tarp self-combusting in the garage. He warned that wood stains and other painting materials can self-ignite under certain circumstances. Express photo by David N. Seelig
