The Hailey Planning and Zoning Commission paved the way on Tuesday for a "Complete Streets" plan that would bring sidewalks onto city rights of way in Hailey.
For many years in Old Hailey, residents have parked on unused ground in city rights of way beside residences. That property will be used for the sidewalks when they are built, leaving little room for automobiles.
The P&Z adopted the plan by resolution. It outlines standards for sidewalks, street designs, curbs and curb cuts to be built across the city when time and money allow.
Commissioner Geoffrey Moore said construction of sidewalks along Second Avenue, one of the streets prioritized in the plan, will force many people to develop parking spaces on their property, accessed through alleys.
"This is one of those tar-and-feather issues," Moore said. "But I'm all for it."
City Planning Director Beth Robrahn said a list of the first streets to get completed sidewalks will be determined when the city rewrites its capital improvement plan, possibly next year.
Further discussion on details of the Complete Streets plan will take place at the next P&Z meeting on Monday, Sept. 20, at 6:30 p.m.
"Hopefully, we can get people involved up front in the decision-making process," Robrahn said.
The plan will have to be approved by the City Council before becoming law.
