The Wood River Jewish Community will celebrate the Hebrew high holy days beginning today with Rosh Hoshana, a day that according to tradition marks the anniversary of the creation of the world.
The Jewish community worldwide will mark the beginning of the year 5771, followed by Yom Kippur 10 days later.
"These are the two most important holidays in the Jewish calendar," said Dora Levin, chair of the Wood River Community Ritual Committee.
She said the 10 days between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur are known as the "Days of Awe."
"It's a period of introspection and reflection that culminates in Yom Kippur," she said.
Friday evening, Sept. 17, marks the beginning of Yom Kippur, a day of fasting and atonement in the Hebrew tradition.
Levin said that according to tradition, on Yom Kippur one atones for sins against God, but for sins against man there is only atonement for those who have asked forgiveness.
Cantor Ida Cahana from Portland will perform the services during the High Holy Days.
