Global activist and author Lynn Twist will facilitate a free symposium on Saturday, Sept. 11, aimed at challenging the assumptions of modern consumer society.

The goal of the symposium is to create an environmentally sustainable, spiritually fulfilling and socially just human presence on Earth.

Twist is the author of "The Soul of Money," based on her 20-year experience fundraising around the world for the international Hunger Project, an initiative founded in 1977 to end hunger in the world.

The "Awakening the Dreamer, Changing the Dream Symposium" will take place from 1-5 p.m. at the All Things Sacred Gallery in the Galleria Building, at Fourth Street and Leadville Avenue in Ketchum.

The symposium, which has been held in 44 countries, was born out of an experience that Twist and her husband, Bill, had while helping the Achuar tribe in the Amazon basin defend their rainforest land against intrusion by oil companies.

The Achuar leaders challenged the Twists to change the dream of the modern world, from one of consumption to a more equitable and sustainable model.

"The energy crisis, social justice crisis, and environmental and spiritual crises in the world all stem from unconscious, unexamined assumptions in our world views," said Twist in an interview. "The symposium is designed to wake us up from a kind of trance of consumerism, to see where the trance comes from, and respond in an awakened, holistic and inspired way toward life."
