Briefs

Iselin resigns from Higher Ground

After five years in the position, Tom Iselin has resigned as chief executive of Higher Ground and Sun Valley Adaptive Sports.

"My business skills and experience are put to the best use by rescuing failing nonprofits and growing new ones," he said in a prepared statement. "Now that SVAS has been rescued and is self-sustaining, it's time to help another noble cause. I would also like to expand my consulting business, publish my latest book, and go back on the public speaking circuit."

Iselin said he plans to spend more time in La Jolla, Calif., where he has acquaintances and family.

The organizations he directed provide various rehabilitation services and recreational opportunities to injured people and wounded veterans.

Trailing named Top 100 event

The Trailing of the Sheep Festival in Ketchum and Hailey has been designated as one of the Top 100 Events in North America for 2011 by the American Bus Association.

Inclusion in the Top 100 list, published as a supplement to the September/October issue of Destinations magazine, indicates that the Trailing of the Sheep Festival offers excellent entertainment value to both tour groups and individual travelers from around the world.

The organization's 2011 Top 100 Events Selection Committee selected the Trailing of the Sheep Festival from among a record number of more than 650 event nominations submitted by its members. Judges considered the event's broad appeal, its accessibility to buses and skill at handling large groups, among other criteria.

The Top 100 Events list is available online at www.buses.org/top100.

Idaho jobless rate edges up

Idaho's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate edged up a tenth of a percentage point in August to 8.9 percent.

The Idaho Department of Labor reported that the increase in the jobless rate is the first since the rate rose two-tenths of a point in February to a near-record 9.5 percent.

The number of people working and seeking work fell more than 900 from July to 756,000. It was the third consecutive decline in the labor force since it peaked at over 761,000 in May. Discouraged by their prospects of finding jobs, more workers have apparently dropped out of the labor force, the Department of Labor reported.

Congress resumed payment of extended federal unemployment benefits to over 8,000 unemployed Idaho workers at the end of July after stopping those benefits in late May.

County and city unemployment rates will be released Sept. 17.

Gooding sets candidate forum

The Gooding Chamber of Commerce will host a District 25 candidates forum on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 5:30 p.m. for the five Legislature candidates up for election this November.

Dubbed "Pizza and Politics," the forum will be split into two debates, one for state Senate candidates Jim Donoval, Randy Patterson and Michelle Stennett and the other for state House candidates Donna Pence and Alex Sutter.

The debates will include questions from the public, which will be collected both before the debate and in writing at the debate. The candidates will also be able to address one question each directly to the other candidates.

The forum will be held at Gooding High School, and is free and open to the public. Gooding's forum is one of four independently organized forums projected to occur this election season.
