The biggest soccer game of the season, so far, for the highly regarded Wood River High School and Twin Falls girls' soccer teams arrives Thursday, Sept. 9 at Sunway Soccer Complex in Twin Falls.

Wood River (4-1-0, 3-0-0 league) is the six-time defending Great Basin Conference champion that boasts four shutouts in five games this fall. Twin Falls (4-1-0, 1-0-0) debuted its GBC season Thursday with an 11-0 road victory over Minico at Rupert.

The two teams played four excellent games last fall—the first season for Twin Falls in the 4A Great Basin—with Wood River winning all four by scores of 2-0, 3-2, 4-3 and 3-2, the last two in shootouts. In the 16-year series, Wood River leads 23-3-5 and hasn't lost to Twin Falls in soccer since 2003.

Wood River, which hosted Burley Tuesday, blanked the Canyon Ridge Riverhawks 9-0 Thursday in Hailey with junior goalkeeper Cheyenne Swanson notching her first shutout.

Sloan Storey and McKenna Chase each scored two goals. Singles came from Tanner Dredge (90th career goal) plus Jessica Martens, Erin Murphy and two first-time scorers, freshman Haley Montgomery and soph Maggie Williams.

Dredge assisted on goals by Storey and Martens in the first 10 minutes, then Montgomery made good on an unassisted goal at 15 minutes. Montgomery assisted Murphy on her goal at 20 minutes. Unassisted goals by Dredge and Chase rounded out first-half scoring.

Storey scored her second goal and fifth overall five minutes after half, from Murphy. Chase tallied her second goal and fifth overall at 57 minutes, from freshman Riley Kilmartin. Williams ended the tally at 67 minutes, from Martens.

The standings of the competitive Great Basin tightened Thursday. Burley and Jerome battled to a 0-0 tie at Jerome and Twin Falls whipped the previously unbeaten Minico Spartans by a 2-1 score.

Burley (3-1-1, 0-0-1) hosted Wood River Tuesday while Jerome (2-1-1, 0-1-1) went to Twin Falls (2-0-1, 1-0-0). Burley won 2-0 at Pocatello Saturday. Jerome prevailed 2-1 over Middleton in non-league action.
