Panthers make short work of Raft River 50-0

Non-league toss-up turns into a holiday rout

The unbeaten Carey High School football team caught Raft River flatfooted and fumble-prone Friday and breezed to a 50-0 non-conference eight-man football win at Derrick Parke Memorial Field.

Carey (2-0, 0-0 league) made sure of its first-ever win over an always-strong Raft River football program by scoring six touchdowns and converting all six times. The first five scores came after Trojan fumbles.

The Panthers, a 1A Division 2 power, out-rushed the bigger 1A Division 1 Raft River team 194-6 and piled up 289 yards to just 20 for the visiting Trojans. The 45-point mercy rule ended the game at halftime.

Junior tailback Charlie Rivera and senior back Tim Hoopes each scored two TDs for the Panthers, who have out-pointed two foes 106-6. Seniors Shane Bingham and Brandon Dilworth added scores. A two-point safety gave Carey 50 points 20 minutes into the holiday weekend home opener.

Nine different players rushed the ball for Carey led by Hoopes (8 carries, 74 yards), senior quarterback Caleb Cenarrusa (6 carries, 45 yards plus 8-for-12, 59 yards passing) and Rivera (7 carries, 31 yards). Rivera recovered two of the five Raft River lost fumbles.

Field position favored Carey, as the Panthers never started a drive farther back than their own 41-yard-line. Raft River (0-1), playing its first game, couldn't solve the diverse Carey offense. On offense, seven errant high snaps from center to quarterback Tanner Anderson accounted for Trojan losses of 81 yards.

Senior Blair Peck spearheaded the hard-tackling Carey defense and the Panthers executed well on the attack.

Carey finishes its stretch of three pre-season games against bigger schools Friday, Sept. 10 at Hagerman (1-1). The Pirates won 46-22 at Lighthouse Christian and lost Friday 56-34 at home to Castleford. The junior varsity game is 4 p.m. followed by the 7 p.m. varsity contest.

Hagerman (5-4 last year, 30-17 over 5 years) is always a threat, although Carey beat the Pirates 36-14 last fall and won 50-22 at Hagerman in 2005. The Pirates are tough at home, 16-6 over the last five years, losing only to Raft River (3 times), Oakley (twice) and Carey.

In eight-man news, Sawtooth Conference South Division contender North Gem of Bancroft (2-0) stunned last year's State 1A Division 2 runner-up Mackay (0-2) 8-6 score Friday at Bancroft; and host Rockland (1-0) gave 37-year assistant and now head coach Dan Ralphs his first varsity win 22-12 over State 1A Division 1 Grace (0-2).

Also, Clark County of Dubois scored its first eight-man football victory in several years 39-0 over Sho-Ban, and Carey's Sept. 25 opponent Pahranagat Valley (Nev.) ran all over host Challis by a 52-8 count.
