SV Opera Competition Hits High Notes

From left, Sun Valley Opera board member Randy Updyke, first-prize winner mezzo soprano Robin Flynn, first-prize winner soprano Aundi Moore and Sun Valley Opera co-founder Frank Meyer celebrate a tie for the first-prize winners at the ninth annual Sun Valley Opera International Vocal Competition on Thursday, Aug. 26, in Seattle, Wash. Flynn, from New York, won with an aria from the “Marriage of Figaro” and a song from “Annie Get Your Gun.” Moore, from Maryland, took first prize with an aria from “La Forza del Destino” and a song from “Showboat.” Meyer said being selected as one of the finalists is highly competitive. Several past finalists have performed in Sun Valley Opera concerts. Opera singers today are expected to sing pieces outside of the standard opera repertoire.
