Just a little bit longer

Mountain bike championships decision around corner

The verdict is still out on whether Sun Valley will host the 2011 and 2012 Mountain Biking National Championships, spanning five days in late July of each year and expected to attract 1,400 athletes and their families.

But the area is a frontrunner.

USA Cycling planned to announce the decision at the beginning of August, but more time has been needed than expected. The winning venue should be disclosed within a week, according to Carrie Westergard, marketing director for the Sun Valley-Ketchum Chamber & Visitors Bureau, which put in the bid for the event to host cross-country Olympic and short-track cross-country competitions.

USA Cycling is the national governing body for competitive cycling in America and is a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee.

The races would be held on Sun Valley Resort's Dollar Mountain. Westergard said the mountain would need about five miles of course construction to host the event. About 250 volunteers would be needed during the event.
