WRHS thinclads off and running in new season

Friday’s CSI footrace opens 2010 slate

Coming off a terrific 2009 season that resulted in a State 4A fourth-place boys' team finish, the Wood River High School cross country teams have high hopes for the 2010 campaign that opens Friday, Aug. 27 at the CSI Invitational in Twin Falls.

Wood River begins with a strong roster of 40 runners including 11 seniors. Featuring 10 returning state qualifiers, the Wolverines are poised to once again qualify both boys' and girls' teams for state, this year set for Oct. 30 at Kelly Park, Soda Springs.

Boys' coach Monte Brothwell said, "We look forward to having all runners progress at their own pace to a level they've never thought they could achieve."

Said girls' coach Shari Kunz, "We hope to help each athlete gain a stronger belief in themselves and discover what they are capable of through their own hard work. The kids are ready to run. It's going to be a fun, great season."

The team has welcomed Wood River English teacher Kari Haugen as the new assistant coach.

Although Hailey graduated last year's state champ Chase Caulkins, the team has excellent returners including seniors James Paris (19th state) and Andrew Pfeiffer (25th state), and juniors Ben Stout (65th state) and Corrine Smith (39th state).

Other state returners are seniors Miles Hendrix, Alison Town, Dani McLaughlin and Connor Hesselbacher, and sophomore Brooke Lawrence. Wood River lost Tristin Bowers (48th state), who moved.

Rounding out the seniors currently practicing are Claire Bowman, Alec England, Laura Kunz, Ashton Lupton, Kylee Richmond and Walter Royston. Juniors are Rebecca Boushele, Andreas Morales-Lopez, Sage Sauerbrey, Sophie Musser and Sean Sutton.

The sophomores include Jacob Adicoff, Chloe Barrymore, Chase England, Mateja Heinrich, Kennedie Howard, Megan Jones, Ian Keys, Kaitlyn Landis, Ian McKenzie and Alyse Northrup. Freshmen are Michael Flolo, Reyna Kelly, Janel Passey, Matt Reidy, Ty Reinemann, Andrew Ryason, Marsha Smith, Mariah Stout and Montana Tucker.

This year's home meet, the Sun Valley Invitational, will be held on Thursday, Sept. 9 at the Sagewillow soccer complex in Elkhorn.

Hosted jointly by the Wood River and Community School teams, the Sun Valley meet will have upwards of 14 teams on the challenging and hilly 3.1-mile course that offers a true cross-country experience.
