4 seek opening on school board

Board chair says selection will be public process

Four Hailey area residents have applied for the Blaine County School District's board of trustees' position vacated in July by Zone 3 Trustee Mari Beth Matthews.

The school district released the names of the applicants Thursday, the day after the deadline for submitting letters of interest. The four candidates are David Gardner, Kathryn Graves, Jackie Mizer and Tommy Richmond.

"I'm glad we have four—that's pretty exciting," Board Chair Julie Dahlgren said.

She said all four of the applicants meet the residency requirement by living within Zone 3, which encompasses western and northern Hailey and the area north of the city. Matthews served as Zone 3 trustee for five years before resigning after moving to California.

Selection of the new trustee will be made by current board members and district Superintendent Lonnie Barber.

Dahlgren said the board is developing questions and procedures for interviewing candidates. She said the interviews will be conducted during a special meeting open to the public in mid-September.

"It's not going to be an executive session," she said. "The whole thing's public."

The new trustee will likely be selected by October and will serve through June 2011. The trustee would be required to seek election in May for a four-year term.
