Members of the Bellevue-based Sawtooth Pony Club were very successful during a regional Eventing Rally July 15-16 at Rafter K, an equestrian facility south of Bellevue.

The Sawtooth Pony Club co-hosted the contest and had nine of its 10 members compete.

Earning the first-place overall team award was Sawtooth Pony Club with Giovanna Leslie, Carmen Leslie, Augusta Catherin-Sauer, Payton McCune and Jillian Shay. Scout Hutchinson was an honorary member, as she just recently joined the club.

Haley Cooper and Kara McNamara were on separate regional teams and helped to earn their teams sixth and seventh places, respectively. Kara's team also captured third place in Horse Management.

Individual awards went to Carmen Leslie and Augusta Catherin-Sauer. They each captured first places in their respective divisions. Payton McCune earned second place in her division, and Giovanna Leslie took third in her class.

Sofia Drougas participated by volunteering during the competition while Jillian, Kara, Haley, and Sofia all devoted volunteer hours in the preceding week to help prepare the facility for the rally.

On Aug. 2, Jillian Shay and Kara McNamara passed their C3 Dressage Specialty Rating, a national examination assessed through the U.S. Pony Club.

Their examiners were from Tennessee and California and the rating took place in Auburn, Wash. This is the first National rating a Pony Club member goes through and is very comprehensive, including aspects of horse care and training as well as riding.

The testing was intense and Jillian and Kara were the only two that passed this particular rating on that day.

The Sawtooth Pony Club is one of over 600 clubs across the country. Its members, ranging in age from 8-17, regularly participate in local, regional, and national Pony Club activities.
