County planning office changes its name

New title puts focus on service, official says

As of Aug. 16, the Blaine County Planning and Zoning Department will officially be known as the Blaine County Land Use and Building Services Department. The change, said director Tom Bergin, is to make sure the department focuses more on serving county residents.

"The service is part of the name, and that's by intention, to try and continually work on that," Bergin said.

County commissioners approved the name change during the Planning and Zoning Department's budget hearing last month.

The new name is intended to more accurately describe the role of the department, with a new emphasis on the building and code-compliance issues handled by staff.

Bergin said the name and some internal structural changes were in response to the county's new outcome-based budgeting process. The process assigns funding to departments based on certain priorities and desired results, which include customer service.

While the public may notice external changes, such as letterhead, as of Aug. 16, department staff will work through the winter to complete the internal changes, Bergin said.
