Peter Smith

The Wood River Valley lost a longtime influence on July 1 when Peter Smith died at home in Hulen Meadows, north of Ketchum.

Smith, 82, helped start local jazz events "On the Green" and the Sun Valley Jazz Festival. He also helped bring back the annual Labor Day weekend Wagon Days celebration after it had been dropped by the wayside.

"He has helped promote many young musicians and played drums with all the best musicians in Idaho," said his wife since 2001, Constance Smith. "He was loved by so many, and we will miss him brightening our days with his clever wit and charm."

A celebration of Smith's life will be held Sunday, Aug. 15, at 1:30 p.m. at the American Legion Hall in Ketchum, at 220 Cottonwood St. The Sun Valley Jazz Band will play along with family and friends.

Smith was born in Los Angeles, where he grew up, also living in Seattle, Wash., and Orange County, Calif. He was one of the original Malibu surfers in 1948 and was a ski instructor, ski racer, lifeguard, member of the Sun Valley Trail Crew, a timekeeper for Boeing in Seattle and more.
