A Filer man and a Burley-area boy were killed in separate all-terrain-vehicle accidents late last week in Blaine County.

Coroner Russell Mikel identified the victims as 65-year-old Jack Hoover Sr. and 15-year-old Shad Dakota Anderson.

Hoover was killed on Croy Creek Road around 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 6. Blaine County Sheriff's Lt. Jay Davis said Hoover was southbound on a green Yamaha four-wheeler when he lost control of the vehicle near the Camas County line about 14 miles west of Hailey. He said the ATV went over an embankment and crashed through bushes and trees as it descended down a slope.

Mikel said Hoover died from head and chest injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders from Wood River Fire and Rescue.

Davis said Hoover's 8-year-old grandson was a passenger on the ATV and received "possible broken ribs and a broken arm and lacerations to the head." He said the injuries turned out to be non-life threatening after the boy was flown by emergency helicopter to St. Luke's Magic Valley Regional Medical Center in Twin Falls.

Davis said Hoover and his grandson were on a camping trip along with boy's father.

In the second fatality, Mikel said Anderson suffered a head injury and was pronounced dead at St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center at 1:44 a.m. on Sunday. He was injured in an ATV crash late Saturday in the Alturas Lake area north of Ketchum.

Mikel said Anderson was taken to the hospital by a Ketchum Fire Department ambulance, which met family members bringing the boy to the hospital at the Sawtooth National Recreation Area headquarters north of Ketchum.

Davis said Anderson was riding eastbound on Alturas Lake Road about a half-mile west of its intersection with state Highway 75 when the accident occurred.

"There were three juveniles on the four-wheeler and one of them fell off," Davis said.

He said the accident was still under investigation Tuesday.
