An excellent triathlon in Emmett

Montgomery, French capture classes


Wood River Valley triathletes Charley French and Georgie Montgomery won their age classes during the Emmett Most Excellent Triathlon Saturday, Aug. 7 at Black Canyon Reservoir near Emmett.

They were among 10 local triathletes attempting two courses—the 32-mile Olympic distance (1500-meter swim, 24.9-mile bike, 6.2-mile run) and Sprint distance (500-yard swim, 12-mile bike and 3.1-mile run).

Montgomery won the Women's 45-49 Olympic class and was the 15th woman overall in 2.37:35 (29:48 swim, 1.19:48 bike, 44:28 run). Placing third in Women's 30-34 was Mollie Holt, the eighth woman overall, in 2.30:00 (27:26, 1.12:30, 46:44).

There were two other Olympic locals in the race won by Boise's Kevin Everett 1.51:49 and Kate Bevilaqua 2.12:19.

Daniel Hollis was third in Clydesdale in 2.35:58 (27:58, 1.08:19, 56:35) and Josh Kantor placed seventh in Men's 25-29 in 2.32:09 (29:41, 1.14:09, 45:19).

French, 84, placed 84th overall among Sprint men and won Men's 80-and-up in 1.34:12 (14:41, 40:15, 35:08). Former Sun Valley resident Jim Gaughran of Carmel Valley, Ca. won Men's 75-79 in 1.29:23.

Other Sprint distance podiums went to Caren Harris third in Women's 25-29 in 1.31:32 (13:37, 45:41, 26:37), to Deborah Mitchell third in Women's 45-49 in 1.37:41 (16:46, 44:20, 29:23); and to Amanda Passey, first in Girls' 10-12 in 1.44:38 (16:03, 53:08, 30:30).

Hailey's Kelly McGarry was fifth in Women's 30-34 in 1.31:08 (13:34, 42:25, 29:45) and Ryan Passey finished 18th Men's 35-39 in 1.48:29 (21:03, 53:07, 28:09). The Sprint winners, both from Boise, were Rob Thiry 1.02:28 and Justine Emge in 1.09:27.
