Bob Jonas

Ketchum-area resident Bob Jonas was riding his bicycle home from the Steve Martin concert Tuesday night when someone shot him in the back with a high-powered BB gun.

Jonas could not be reached for comment, but his wife, former Blaine County Commissioner Sarah Michael, said the BB penetrated his jacket and shirt and lodged about a half-inch in his back. The BB was removed later Tuesday night at St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center.

Ketchum Police Sgt. Nathan Taylor said the incident occurred shortly after 10:30 p.m. on Warm Springs Road near the Wood River Community YMCA building while Jonas was riding from the Martin concert at River Run to his home in Hulen Meadows.

Taylor said police have no suspects, but a dark-colored Jeep Cherokee or Wagoneer was seen speeding away from the area immediately after the shooting.

Taylor said the shooting was apparently done at random, and not directed at Jonas personally.

"It fits a juvenile type profile," Taylor said.

If apprehended, the shooter could face a felony charge of aggravated battery. Taylor said aggravated battery is defined as "a great ability to cause harm or even death."

The type of BB gun used is not known, but was evidently a gas-powered or multiple-pump weapon.

"With a BB going a half-inch into someone's back, I consider that a potentially deadly weapon," Taylor said.
