August's lazy bluebird days have finally arrived, which can mean only one thing. It's time for the Blaine County Fair.

Beginning next Monday and culminating the following weekend, Blaine County will celebrate its agricultural roots at the annual county fair. The fair—a part of Blaine County life every summer since the 1960s—will take place Aug. 9-14 at the Blaine County Fairgrounds in Carey.

The day-to-day life of most county residents does not revolve around long days on the farm and ranch. More than anything, the annual county fair provides a peek into the rich, rural lifestyle that's still going strong in places like the Bellevue Triangle and in Carey.

Some of the highlights of this year's fair include livestock exhibits, country music, a family barbecue, horse show and scarecrow contest.

The fair's busiest day will be Saturday, Aug. 14. The day's events include fun rides for the kids—with tickets selling for $1 each, 12 for $10 or and all-day pass for $20—and the Blaine County rodeo.

Exhibits will be open to the public from Thursday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Want to leave your car behind and let someone else drive? Shuttles provided by Mountain Rides will depart from the Ketchum YMCA at 10 a.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday. The shuttle will make stops at the Hailey Park and Ride lot, at Main Street and Pine in Bellevue, and at the Picabo General Store. Additional shuttle rides to and from the fair will also be provided. The shuttle rides are free, though donations are gladly accepted.

For exact shuttle times at each stop and other Blaine County Fair information, click on the "Blaine County Fair" tab near the top of the page on the Blaine County Web site, at www.blainecounty.org. For additional fair information, contact fair board president Kyle Green at (208) 481-0209.

This year's grand marshals for the Blaine County Fair are Carey residents Rick and Diane Baird. Born and raised in Carey, Rick is an Army veteran with 20 years of military service. Diane also served six years in the Army, which is how she and Rick met.

After their military service, the Bairds returned to Carey. Both have been active in public life, with Rick serving both as a Carey city councilman and then Carey mayor, a position he held for 12 years. Earlier this year, Diane retired from a 20-year career at the Blaine County Treasurer's Office.
