Frederick A. Sprenger


Frederick A. Sprenger, age 101, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away on July 30, 2010.

He was born to Anthony and Gertrude Sprenger on Jan. 27, 1909. He was a graduate of Central Catholic High School and attended the University of Notre Dame. Fred then enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served his country proudly during WWII and was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant Commander. He then spent his career working with his father, A.O., and his brother, George, owning and operating the Sprenger Men's Wear stores. During the 1970s he also became a land developer, owning the Sprenger Grub Land Corp. in Sun Valley and the Sprenger Spath Corporation in Monroe, Mich.

He was a longtime honorary member of the Sylvania Country Club and longtime member of the Toledo Club. He was an uncle to six boys and a great-uncle to 21 nieces and nephews.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, George A. Sprenger and Monsignor Albert C. Sprenger. He is survived by his sister, Gertrude Meehan, of Dearborn, Mich.; nephews, Tom (Patricia), Albert (Marcia); Patrick, George (Mary Ellen), Mark (Nancy) Sprenger and George (Cheryl) Meehan.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 2, at the Gesu Catholic Church, 2049 Parkside Boulevard, Toledo, Ohio 43607. The family will begin receiving friends at 10 a.m. at Interment Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Gesu School Sprenger Endowment Fund or to the Sprenger Scholarship Fund at Central Catholic High School, St. Francis de Sales High School, St. John's Jesuit High School, Notre Dame Academy or St. Ursula Academy.
