Willow house an inspiration

I had no idea the experience would be so rich when I signed up to be part of the crew working on Patrick Dougherty's sculpture across from the Ketchum Post Office. I was unaware of his work until I saw his Web site, www.stickwork.net, at the suggestion of the staff at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts.

For two weeks, I worked several hours a day on the piece, now named "Centerpiece." During the last week, I found myself showing up earlier and staying later. Patrick was patient and gracious as he gave us instruction as to how to weave the willow so it would frame a window opening, or how to follow his line and help create the gesture of a wall. He was remarkably trusting of his volunteers and completely unpretentious in his manner when talking to passersby who would ask questions and compliment him on his work.

I am grateful to The Center for inviting Patrick and letting him share his process with us. The work will stand for about two years and should be spectacular in the snow.
