Summer training for SVSEF alpine

Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation Alpine Program Director Ruben Macaya has announced trips and training programs for the young alpine crew at Sun Valley.

Macaya said, “We have two camps in the Southern Hemisphere.

“Ten athletes left July 29 for three weeks in Australia with coaches Nate Schwing and Pat Savaria. They are Amanda Stelling, Nicole Roos, Teagen Palmer, Tanner Farrow, Harlan Collins, Tanner Dirstine, Miles Sweek, Ben Kanellitsas, KJ Savaria and Kipling Weisel.

“They are training for a week and then will participate in the Australian National Championships at Thredbo, and the ANZAC (Australia-New Zealand) Series at Mt. Hotham. These eight starts should help our athletes lower their FIS points prior to the season.

“A smaller group of six J3 athletes will leave Aug. 4 for Argentina with coaches Scott McGrew and myself. They are Alexandra Black, Samantha Busby, Jordan Fitzgerald, Tanner Josey, Logan Shipley and Gavin Shipley. They plan on doing a technical camp skiing in La Hoya, Esquel for 10 days and free skiing in Cerro Catedral, Bariloche for two days before returning home. The idea is to sharpen their technical and tactical skills and have some good ‘on snow’ time in winter conditions.”

“And dryland training will continue for those athletes at home—getting stronger, faster and better!”

Galena Grinder clarification

Though he was officially registered for the Sport Division in the Knobby Tire Championship Series, Ketchum cyclist Austin Bourret completed the 22.5-mile cross-country course during the July 24 Galena Grinder with a time of 2.07:56. That gave Bourret the second-fastest finish in the 19-29 age group. Bourret’s finishing time was printed correctly in the July 28 edition of the Idaho Mountain Express, but he was ranked against the times of riders in the 17.5-mile race.

The camp has grown to include instructors who are Olympic champions and national team members. Master Larry Duke, 7th Degree Black belt, (Idaho Taekwondo Training Center, Boise) once again organized the Wood River Valley camp.

Wood River wrestler travels for big national meet

Wood River High School sophomore Storm Anderson of Hailey made Idaho's national Freestyle and Greco team and traveled to the Cadet National Dual Meets June 17-21 at Rochester, Minn. His selection at 160 pounds was quite a distinction because only one Idaho wrestler in each weight made the team that competed in the U.S.’s biggest Cadet dual meet. The tournament was made up of 30 teams, including powerhouses from Iowa, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas and Florida. Team Idaho finished in eighth place. Anderson trains at USA

Wilma’s photo illustration

Bellevue powerlifter Wilma Cadavona may be strong, but she’s probably not as strong as she seemed in a courtesy photo published in the July 14 edition of the Idaho Mountain Express. That photo, with Wilma lifting overhead an airport baggage carrier loaded with four fellow employees, should have been identified as a photo illustration.
