All-Star games bring together softball stars

In Ketchum, Hailey

Wedged between last weekend's Ketchum Coed Softball League tournament and the July 24-25 Hailey Coed Softball League season finale were a couple of All-Star games—one in Hailey and one in Ketchum.

On Wednesday, coaches Francis Gilbo and Lenny Joseph wrote the line-up cards and guided the stars in the annual Ketchum Coed Softball All-Star contest at West Ketchum Coliseum. And the biggest star of the night was Nic Nottingham of Gilbo's.

Hailey native and former Willamette University pitcher Nottingham hit for the cycle from the #3 spot in the order as the Gilbo group lashed out 24 hits in a 13-7 nine-inning win over Joseph's All-Stars.

Nottingham (5 hits) ripped a pair of triples and finished his evening by cracking a two-run homer in the ninth. And he wasn't the only productive player for the winners.

Leadoff hitter Geoff Gardner (3 hits, double, 3 runs), Kyle Rushton (4 hits, double), Brenda Johnson (3 hits, double) and Brad Hennessy (2 hits, 2 runs) enjoyed big nights as Gilbo's All-Stars grabbed a 5-2 lead after four frames and never looked back.

Joseph's All-Stars (17 hits) couldn't muster much offense until scoring four times in the ninth as Cooper Minnis cleared the bases with a double. Other hitters included Matt Christian (3 hits, double, 2 runs), Buffalo Rixon (3 hits, 2 doubles) and Wendy Speth (2 hits, 2 runs).

On Tuesday, July 27 at Lions Park in Hailey, the Ketchum All-Stars (16 hits) took care of the Hailey All-Stars (12 hits) by a score of 11-4. Anthony Anderson (3 hits, 2 doubles, 4 runs) was the big Ketchum gun.

Jeff Burrell (3 hits), Nottingham and Craig Morse added homers for the Ketchum winners while Speth contributed two hits and scored twice from the clean-up spot. Hailey had an early 2-1 lead on a two-run homer by Mike Beall (3 hits) but couldn't add much to that total. Shanell Nelson (RBI double) added a pair of hits for Hailey's All-Stars.

Before the Hailey city tournament, the league staged its own All-Star game Friday, July 23—with the Green All-Stars winning 13-10 over Gray in nine innings at Lions Park.

Green's Sean Harrington (3 hits, 3 runs) clouted two homers including a bases-clearing jack in Green's decisive seven-run fifth inning. Jeff Poggi (3 hits) and Riley O'Grady (2 doubles, 2 runs) helped Green's cause.

For Gray, Mike Beall ripped three hits. Kellen Chatterton drilled a homer while Morgan Uhrig and Anthony Rooney each had two hits including a double.
