TOURNAMENT RESULTS

WINNER BRACKET GAMES

Principal Recruiting 11, KECH 10

Both teams wanted it big time in the Upper Field tournament debut, but Principal had last ups and made the most of it when Rod Watson (2 hits, 2 runs) tripled with two outs and scored the game winner in the home seventh. KECH surged ahead 10-8 with a 5-run, 6-hit visitor seventh capped by a two-out, 2-run Jeff Heinecke homer. But Principal had the top of its batting order ready to rip in the home seventh. Geoff Gardner (2 doubles, 2 runs) opened with a two-bagger, Sue Mulcahy singled and, with one out, Sharon Payne Bolton (3 hits, 2-run HR, 3 runs) delivered a single and Watson came up with the game winner. Principal: Kellee Havens, Jamie Claiborn (2 runs) and Wendy Hosman 2 hits apiece. KECH: Sean Harrington 3 hits (2 doubles, HR), 2 runs and 4 RBI, Lenny Joseph 3 hits and 2 runs, Jamie Rivette and Danny Maloney (2 doubles) with 2 hits and 2 runs each, Kate Sparks 2 hits.

Firefighters 12, Elevate 10

Firefighters out-hit the fast-rising Elevators 14-7 while building an 11-6 lead after four frames. Then the winners held down Elevate in the final two innings. Firefighters: Matt Jetsetnick cycle and 3 runs, Matt Christian 4 hits (HR, 2 doubles) and 2 runs, John Craig 2 hits (double) and 2 runs, Tyler Corrock 3 hits. Elevate: Cooper Minnis 2 hits (double) and 3 runs, Brad Hennessy 2 hits, Matt Siegel 2 hits (double).

Casino 10, Principal Recruiting 6

Top-seeded regular-season champion Casino opened its tournament quest with 16 hits in six at-bats led by Craig Morse (3 hits, 2 doubles, 2 runs), Nic Nottingham (2 solo HR), Mark Belanger 2 hits (double) and Sarah Torres (3 hits). Casino scored 7 runs in the fourth and fifth for a 10-2 lead, then held on as Principal (13 hits) rallied for 4 runs in the sixth. Principal: Sue Mulcahy 3 hits (double), Tom Moreland (double) and Geoff Gardner (double) 2 hits apiece.

Lefty’s Bar & Grill 16, Firefighters 5

Lefty’s, averaging a league-best 17.7 runs per game on the season, almost matched that run total with a 23-hit attack in its first city tournament game. Tony Mallane (3 hits) smashed a 3-run double giving Lefty’s a 4-2 lead after two innings, then Dave Hausmann (3 hits, 2 doubles, 3 runs) ripped a 3-run HR for a 7-2 cushion in the third. The Lefty’s defense never allowed Firefighters (11 hits) more than a single run in an inning. M.J. Musselman (3 hits, 2 runs) delivered a 2-run triple in the sixth, and Jeff Burrell (3 hits, 2 runs) added a 2-run double in the Lefty’s seventh. Lefty’s: Buffalo Rixon (double) and Anthony Anderson 2 hits apiece, Kyle Rushton 4 hits (double) and 2 runs. Firefighters: 2 hits each for Matt Christian, Karly Maratea, John Craig and Matt Jetsetnick

Casino 12, Lefty’s Bar & Grill 3

Some of the Casino players still remembered their narrow 12-11 loss to Lefty’s in the semi-finals of last year’s city tournament won by Color Haus 18-3 over Lefty’s. So the Casino served notice early on, erasing Lefty’s 2-0 first-inning lead with a 3-run first. Leadoff hitter Cody Lampl (2 hits, triple, 3 runs) singled, Gretchen Wagner (2 hits, 2 runs) followed with a single and Nic Nottingham (3-for-3, triple, 2 runs) belted a 3-run HR. Casino never trailed again, stretching its lead with 2 runs in the third and 7 runs on 8 hits in the fifth. On defense, Casino limited the high-scoring Lefty’s squad to 8 hits, 2 by Anthony Anderson. Casino: Sarah Torres 2 hits (double), Matt Kendrick 2 hits (double) and 2 runs.

LOSER BRACKET GAMES

Principal Recruiting 15, Elevate 0 (5 innings)

Clean-up hitter Sharon Payne Bolton (3 hits, 3 runs) did just that with a 2-run HR in Principal’s 5-run, 6-hit fourth that extended a 9-0 lead to 14-0. Principal out-hit Elevate 18-3 and had each starting player hit safely led by 3 hits apiece from Geoff Gardner (double, 2 runs), Sue Mulcahy (2 runs) and Tom Moreland (double, 3 runs). Others were Rod Watson (2 hits, double, 3 RBI) and Jamie Claiborn (2 hits, double).

KECH 8, Firefighters 7

Still smarting from its 1-run loss to Principal Recruiting, KECH (14 hits) survived a 1-run squeaker led by Jeff Heinecke (4 hits, 2 doubles), who singled home Sean Harrington (double, HR) with the game winner in the home seventh. For the Firefighters, Matt Christian (4 hits, 2 runs) tripled and scored in the visitor seventh putting the Firefighters ahead 7-6. But KECH’s Danny Maloney (3 hits, triple, double, 2 runs) singled in the home seventh, Harrington had a one-out double, Annie Byerly (2 hits, 2 runs) followed with a single and Heinecke had his game winner. Firefighters: Tyler Corrock 3 hits (2 triples) and 2 runs, Steve McCoy 2 hits (double).

KECH 16, Principal Recruiting 8

KECH avenged its opening-round loss to Principal with a 22-hit barrage led by leadoff hitter Danny Maloney, who hit for the cycle with 4 hits, 4 runs and 3 RBI. Trailing 6-4 after three, KECH came alive in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings with 11 runs on 14 hits. KECH: Kirsten Swenson 3 hits and 2 runs, Scotty Carlsen 3 hits and 2 runs, and 2 hits each by Jamie Rivette, Sean Harrington (2 doubles, 2 RBI), Jeff Heinecke (2 runs), Shannon Flavin (double, 3 RBI) and Leah O’Flynn (2 hits, 2 runs). Principal: Jim Carlsen 3 hits, Rod Watson 2 hits, 2 runs and 2 RBI, Tom Moreland 2-run HR.

Lefty’s Bar & Grill 8, KECH 5

Poised for the upset with a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning, KECH watched Lefty’s come alive for 6 runs on 8 hits in the home fourth. Five consecutive hits followed by a two-out, bases-clearing triple off the bat of Anthony Anderson (4 hits, 2 doubles, 2 runs) did much of the Lefty’s damage in the uprising that turned the tide. When KECH threatened in the visitor seventh for one run and threatened to do more with slugger Sean Harrington (3 hits, double, 2-run HR) at the plate and the bases loaded with one out, Lefty’s pitcher Tony Mallane enticed Harrington to line into a double play that ultimately ended KECH’s excellent tournament run. Lefty’s: Jeff Burrell 3 hits (triple, double), Kyle Rushton 2 hits (double), Nicole Buckwalter 2 hits, Levie Smith and Brenda Blackwell 2 hits apiece. KECH: Danny Maloney 2 hits (HR) and 2 runs.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES

Lefty’s Bar & Grill 11, Casino 10

Ten of the 21 runs were unearned in a rather sloppy game (6 errors). Needing to win twice for its first league title, Lefty’s seized the initiative with 8 runs on 8 hits in the third and fourth for a 9-7 lead. The lead stood up, although Casino scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh but stranded 4 other runners in scoring position

Lefty’s Bar & Grill 7, Casino 6

Trailing 5-1 after four frames, Lefty’s woke up in the home fifth with 5 runs on 4 hits. The decisive rally started with a four-pitch leadoff walk drawn by Nicole Buckwalter, a one-out single by Levie Smith along the third base line and an RBI single by Buffalo Rixon (4 hits). Anthony Anderson (2 hits, 3 RBI) delivered a 2-run single and Jeff Burrell (2 hits) belted a towering 2-run double off the center field fence. The Casino equalized 6-6 in the visitor seventh on a leadoff double by Craig Morse and an RBI single by Cody Lampl (4 hits). But #10 hitter Levie Smith opened the home seventh with a single, Rixon moved her along with his fourth hit of the game and Anderson pounded the game-winning one-hop RBI single off the outfield fence. The Casino out-hit Lefty’s 16-13 but stranded 13 runners, 9 in scoring position.
