Search is on for school board member

Candidates have until Aug. 18 to submit letters of interest

The Blaine County School District board of trustees has started its search for potential candidates to replace former board member Mari Beth Matthews, who resigned from her spot on the board on July 13.

Matthews served on the school board for five years representing Zone 3, which encompasses western and northern Hailey and the area north of the city. She reportedly sold her home in Hailey and is now living in California.

For now, the board is seeking letters of interest from potential candidates living within Zone 3, said School Board Clerk Laurie Kaufman. Those interested have until Aug. 18 at 3 p.m. to notify the school board of their interest.

Letters of interest should be sent to: Laurie Kaufman, board clerk for the Blaine County School District, at 118 West Bullion St., Hailey, Idaho 83333.

Letters may also be emailed to Kaufman at lkaufman@blaineschools.org.

"People don't have to go into great detail," Kaufman said of the letters of interest.

Once the school board receives all of the letters, they'll be scheduling interviews with the potential candidates.

Idaho code generally allows up to 90 days for the school board to appoint a new member. However, if someone has not been found, the school board can widen its search to the entire county for another 30 days, Kaufman said.

The newly appointed board member will serve through June 2011, after which they can place their name on the May 2011 trustee election ballot to run for a full, four-year term.

Board members' duties and responsibilities include attending regular monthly board meetings and special board meetings within 24 hours notice.

Questions about the duties of board members can be directed to Kaufman from Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at (208) 578-5003.
