School’s permit up for modification

Expansion to 44 students requested

The Mountain School near Bellevue could expand its capacity, if an amendment to its permit is approved at a Blaine County Planning and Zoning hearing on Thursday, July 22.

The school, located off Kirtley Street northwest of the Bellevue Business Park, is currently limited to 27 students and can only have 100 people on the property when hosting a large-scale event.

Katharine Woods, the school's founder and president, is seeking permission to expand the school to a maximum of 44 students, with an event capacity of 160.

Woods' permit was first approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission in January 2005, after some neighbors voiced concerns about traffic flow and child safety.

The school—based on the Waldorf model of education—is located near the Chantrelle subdivision on the west side of Highway 75. Some property owners were concerned that parents would drive through the subdivision to access the school, increasing traffic. The school's tuition agreement prevents parents from using the subdivision to access the school.

If approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission, the permit would not need to be approved by the county commissioners.

The hearing will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Old Blaine County Courthouse in Hailey. Public comment will be taken.
