The Expedition Inspiration Fund for Breast Cancer Research will hold two Sawtooth mountain adventure events next month to raise money for breast cancer research. The first event will be a non-technical climb of the Elephant's Perch, a 2,400 vertical gain and five-mile round trip from the Canyon Camp. Climbers will leave on Friday, Aug. 13, and will be led by Sawtooth Mountain Guides. The climb will end with a celebration dinner at Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch on Saturday evening.

On Saturday, Aug. 14, Expedition Inspiration will offer a six-mile day hike up Fishhook Creek. Participants are encouraged to team up with friends to take the hike and have lunch on the beach.

The Elephant's Perch climb is $250 per person with a fundraising goal of $2,500. The Fishhook Creek hike is $25 per hiker with a fundraising goal of $250.

< The Expedition Inspiration Fund for Breast Cancer Research was conceived as a tribute to the courage and determination of breast cancer survivors and to the memories of the thousands of women and men whose lives were cut short by the disease. Breast cancer survivor Laura Evans and premiere international mountain guide Peter Whittaker founded the organization in 1993.

Evans' first climb was Argentina's Mount Aconcagua in January 1995. Evans and 17 other breast cancer survivors used the climb to raise over $2 million for breast cancer research.

The mission of the Expedition Inspiration Fund for Breast Cancer Research is to raise both awareness of the disease and money to benefit innovative breast cancer research, public education and patient support. Through organized and sponsored outdoor endeavors, Expedition Inspiration promotes the physical and mental well-being of breast cancer survivors.

Breast cancer affects one in every eight American women and is the leading cause of death of women ages 35 to 54. Eighty percent of women with breast cancer have no known risk factors for the disease. According to Expedition Inspiration, 1.8 million women in the U.S. have been diagnosed with breast cancer and 1 million more have the disease and don't know it.
