Here Comes The Judge
Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas, right, greets one of the few children in the audience at the annual summer conference of the Utah State Bar Association Saturday in Sun Valley. Thomas has served on the high court for 19 years after being appointed in 1991 by President George H. W. Bush to fill the seat vacated by Thurgood Marshall. In his address, Thomas described the work schedule of the Supreme Court, the close, hardworking relationships with the law clerks and the communication process between justices. He saluted his colleagues, maintained that his position is the highest possible honor for him and that living up to his oath of office is all-important. Often labeled as a conservative, Thomas said that labels such as Republican, Democrat, liberal or conservative aren’t important, and that he judges cases on merit, truth and the law.
