Police initiate safety program at crosswalk

Cops will have their eyes on bicyclists and pedestrians

The Ketchum Police Department will conduct a crosswalk safety program at various intersections in the city on Friday, July 16, to promote safety and community awareness of street crossing requirements.

Police Chief Steve Harkins said there have been numerous complaints about street crossing violations, not only by motorists but also by bicyclists and pedestrians. He said police will be watching all street crossing activity during the program.

The program will also involve a plain-clothes officer crossing at various intersections in Ketchum while other officers observe potential violations.

Harkins said that Idaho law requires that drivers "yield the right-of-way, slowing down or stopping if need be, to a pedestrian crossing a highway or street within a crosswalk." Bicyclists are required to dismount and push their bike through the crosswalk in order to obtain pedestrian status. Otherwise they are subject to the same laws as motorists, Harkins said.
