A Celebration of Mountain Life will be a day for people, young and old, who treasure mountain living. The idea sprouted from several community members and the Sun Valley Ski Patrol to raise money to benefit the family of Tim Michael, who died last winter in an avalanche on Bald Mountain. Proceeds from the day will be given to Susie and Jake Michael, Tim's wife and son.

In addition, A Celebration of Mountain Life will be an opportunity to thank all the first responders who work so hard to keep valley residents and visitors safe in the mountains.

The event on Wednesday, July 21, will begin with a fire services appreciation day from noon to 4 p.m. at the River Run parking lot, free to all. The Sun Valley and Ketchum fire departments will provide public education and an opportunity to meet firefighters. In addition, it will be an opportunity for kids to become familiar with fire-fighting equipment.

Demonstrations will include a car extrication, St. Luke's ambulance tour, friendly firefighter play-and-learn, Sawtooth Mountain Guides' avalanche beacon demonstration, rescue dog search-and-rescue with Sun Valley Police Chief Cam Dagget, demonstration with Timmer the fire dog, an aerial tower lift from a fire engine and a helicopter tour.

Smokey Bear will be on hand and there will be a raffle for a chance to win an Air St. Luke's family membership. Sun Valley Fire Chief Jeff Carnes will have a barbecue and an Air St. Luke's helicopter will land at 1 p.m. Up to 10 fire engines will be at the event and booths will include firewise information, the BLM and National Forest Service as well as home safety, which will have a English-Spanish translator. A pet-safety demonstration will include CPR for dogs and cats.

The multi-faceted event will continue with live music from 5-9 p.m. at River Run, with the Disciples of Rock, Kole Moulton & the Lonely Road and headliner Dave Mason. Included in A Celebration for Mountain Life will be a silent auction with 12 "adventure" lots, raffle tickets for two 2010-11 season ski passes courtesy of the Sun Valley Co., face-painting and hula hoops for the kids, and Sun Valley Ski Patrol T-shirt sales. Tickets are available at Atkinsons' Markets in Ketchum and Hailey. The concert tickets are $20 and $5 for children 12 and under. Food will available for purchase from a barbecue.
