Blaine County commissioners will address this fall whether to grant a retroactive stream-alteration permit for a jetty constructed in the Big Wood River south of Ketchum.
The 70-foot jetty, built in 2007 by the South Gimlet Water Users Association without a permit to divert water into Gimlet, has been contested due to its possible impact on the floodplain.
The jetty has been determined to cause a potential 4-inch rise in the 100-year flood elevation. The local rise has been conditionally approved by FEMA, but still must be resolved with a county flood ordinance.

County Code Compliance Specialist Megan Stelma said the county can amend the ordinance, but that's a sometimes-lengthy process that must go through the Planning and Zoning Commission. If such an amendment is passed, the South Gimlet Water Users Association can apply for a retroactive stream-alteration permit under the new ordinance.
A timetable for public hearings has not been set, but Stelma said they are likely to occur this fall.
