Holiday tennis brings 163 players to Sun Valley

Nice weather for Lyle Pearson tournament

Beautiful early-summer weather and fine tennis marked the 2010 Lyle Pearson Fourth of July Tennis Championships at Sun Valley Resort Saturday through Monday, July 3-5. There were 163 players in 264 events.

Texas A&M college player Daniel Brown of Montgomery, Texas won Men's Open singles while 13-year-old Boise prospect Bianca Mok captured the Women's Open singles round-robin competition. Brown dropped only nine games in four straight set wins.

Wood River players competed well during the three-day meet and captured one championship out of the 18 classes—that coming in Women's 4.0 doubles with Barbara Figge and Kristin Miller taking the title out of nine teams in the field.

Recently crowned Idaho 4A high school boys' doubles champion Raleigh Grossbaum was the runner-up in the 13-player Men's 4.5 singles class. Grossbaum teamed up with his partner Charlie Grabow to place second in 4.0 doubles.

Meanwhile, Peter Samway of Sun Valley and Hadley DeBree made it all the way to the finals of Mixed 9.0 doubles before falling in the championship. There was one local consolation championship team—Tim Kanellitsas and George Maurtua in Men's 4.5 doubles.

Players from the Boise area dominated the three-day tournament co-sponsored by Sturtevants Mountain Outfitters and Atkinsons' Markets. Prize money ranged up to $400. Tournament director was David Perry. Next: The Labor Day Championships at Sun Valley Sept. 4-6.

Singles

Men's Open championship—Daniel Brown of Montgomery, Texas 6-2, 6-3 over Christopher Arena of Salt Lake City, Utah.

Consolation final—Shaun Maddox of Montgomery, Texas 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 over Jayson Mok, Boise. Local players included Peter Samway (13 players).

Men's 5.0 championship—Steven Schossberger of Boise by default over Trevor Bain of Jackson Hole, Wyo.

Consolation final winner—Aaron Greenberg of Encino, Ca. Locals included Peter Atkinson (7 players).

Men's 4.5 championship—Chris Christensen of Caldwell 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 over Raleigh Grossbaum of Ketchum.

To make the final, Grossbaum won three straight set matches—6-4, 6-3 over Tanner Hayden of Boise, 6-3, 6-1 over #2-seeded John Perry of Boise anhd 6-2, 6-4 over Cody Miller, Eagle.

Consolation final—Robert Johnson of Walnut Creek, Ca. by default over Hunter Weaver, Ketchum. Other locals included Josh Morell, Peter Samway and Anthony Velo (13 players).

Men's 4.0 championship—Kory Putnam of Moscow 6-7 (2), 6-1, 6-0 over Colby Gempler of Boise.

Consolation final—Russell Moorhead of Boise 6-2, 6-1 over David Scott, Boise. Locals included Charlie Grabow, Stephen Pfeiffer, Michael Weaver, Tim Kanellitsas, Josh Morell and John Kanellitsas (16 players).

Men's 3.5 championship—Jeff Buckingham of Boise 6-3, 7-6 (4) over Kirk Whittaker of Boise.

Consolation final—Paul Reed of Seattle 6-4, 6-0 over John Jacoby of Ketchum. Other locals included Patrick Riedinger (15 players).

Women's Open championship—Bianca Mok of Boise 6-4, 6-4 over Theresa Madson of Boise. Locals included Lily Fink-Debray (4 players).

Women's 4.5 championship—Michelle Phillips of Meridian 6-0, 6-2 over Susan Pavek of Pocatello.

Consolation final—Madelaine Ryan of Boise 6-4, 6-2 over Allegra Gordon of Woodside, Ca. (6 players).

Women's 4.0 championship—Sabina Delatorre of Coral Gables, Fla. 6-3, 6-2 over Skylar Schossberger of Boise.

Consolation final—Katherine Murin of Kuna 6-2, 6-1 over Wendy Klein of Meridian. Locals included Jessica Hamilton, who lost 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 to Schossberger in the semis (7 players).

Doubles

Men's Open championship—Daniel Brown and Shaun Maddox of Montgomery, Texas by default over Cameron Lickle of San Diego, Ca. and Anthony Velo of Sun Valley.

Consolation final—Austin Miller of Eagle and Jayson Mok of Boise 6-4, 7-6 (2) over Blaine Massey of Eagle and Kenny Mitchell of Meridian (6 teams).

Men's 4.5 championship—Steve Caven of Boise and Mark Phillips of Meridian 6-2, 7-6 (5) over Mike Buckingham and Ken Coffey of Boise.

Consolation final—Tim Kanellitsas and George Maurtua 7-5, 6-4 over Phil Ellis of Jerome and Robert Welch of Twin Falls. Other locals included Daniel Hart and Ira Shepard, Mark Pynn and Aaron Greenberg (9 teams).

Men's 4.0 championship—Andrew Tzeng and Di-Yuan Tzeng of Eagle 6-0, 6-1 over Raleigh Grossbaum and Charlie Grabow.

Consolation final—Buckner Harris of Boise and Gary Miller of Star 2-6, 6-2, 10-3 over Russell Moorhead and Bill Sharp of Boise. Other locals included Edgar Blair and Ira Shepard, John and Tim Kanellitsas (12 teams).

Men's 3.5 championship—Brian Champion and Gary Smith of Boise 5-7, 6-2, 10-7 over Kirk Whittaker and Kyle Whittaker of Boise.

Consolation final winners—Eric Hartvigsen of Boise and Rico Sims of Meridian. Locals included Jim Josel and Ben Kanellitsas, Don Porterfield of Bellevue and Jack Daliere of Wells, Nev. (7 teams).

Women's 4.5 championship—Katherine Murin of Kuna and Sandra Sells of Nampa 3-6, 6-1, 12-10 over Lynda Dimick and Jami Garver, Boise.

Consolation final—Dawna Buckingham and Tammie Seviere-Coffey of Boise 7-6 (4), 6-3 over Jennifer Colson of Eagle and Holly Johnson of Boise (6 teams).

Women's 4.0 championship—Barbara Figge and Kristin Miller of Ketchum won three matches in straight sets including the 6-3, 6-3 final over #1-seeded Darlene Miller of Star and Susan Schossberger of Boise.

Consolation final—Carla Latta and Teresa McDonald of Boise 6-2, 2-6, 10-2 over Christine Agosta of Boise and Suzanne Sims of Meridian. Locals included Janie Coleman of Bellevue and Lana Penrose of Henderson, Nev., Alejandra Alvarado and Carmen Finegan (9 teams).

Mixed Open championship—Anthony Hunt and Lynda Dimick of Boise 6-4, 6-4 over Dan Buckingham and Rilee Moorhead, Boise (4 teams).

Mixed 9.0 championship—Nick Wilson and Rachel Moorhead of Boise 6-1, 6-4 over Peter Samway and Hadley DeBree.

Samway and DeBree won three matches before the final including an opening-round 6-2, 2-6, 10-7 victory over #2-seeded Mike Buckingham and Gina Sharp of Boise, and a 6-2, 6-3 semi-final win over Raleigh Grossbaum and Jessica Hamilton.

Consolation final—Mike Buckingham and Gina Sharp of Boise 6-3, 6-1 over Chris Christensen of Caldwell and Ashley Fisher of Philomath, Ore. Locals included Gabi Perenchio and Hunter Weaver, Peter Atkinson and Allegra Gordon (15 teams, biggest tournament draw).

Mixed 8.0 championship—Jeff Buckingham and Channing Yip of Boise 6-3, 6-3 over Carlos Meza of Twin Falls and Sabine Delatorre of Coral Gables, Fla.

Consolation final—Cody Miller of

Eagle and Deni Hawkins of Boise 6-3, 6-2 over Gary and Darlene Miller of Star. Locals included Michael Weaver and Suzanne Williams, Casey Finegan and Carmen Finegan, James Perkins and Lana Penrose, Edgar Blair and Sharon Lyon of Boise, William Eagan and Jessica Hamilton, Daniel Hart and Cindy Biedebach of Boise (12 teams).

Mixed 7.0 championship—Kyle Whittaker and Skylar Schossberger of Boise 6-1, 2-6, 10-3 over Michael and Rhonda Jaffe of Edmonds, Wash.

Consolation final winners—Ryan Kester and Arla Kester of Boise. Locals included Margaret Walker and Jack Daliere (10 teams).
