Pletcher, Conners drink from Wood River Cup

The ninth annual Wood River Cup short-track cross-country mountain bike racing crowned a pair of new series champions Wednesday night.

Reid Pletcher won the Men's A series title and Janelle Conners captured the Women's championship for the first time. They drank bubbly from the Wood River Cup itself at the Powerhouse awards ceremony.

The 2010 series debuted June 2 and ran every Wednesday through June 30 on the backside of Rotarun Ski Area three miles west of Hailey. For the overall championship, racers took their best four finishes and the final race was doubled.

Race director Billy Olson of Hailey's Powerhouse said Wednesday's championship course was "challenging, fun to watch, exciting from a spectator's point of view." He added that 2010 was "the best women's season ever" for the WR Cup.

Here are the top cyclists for the series, along with Wednesday's "Race 5" placers and first lap winners:

Men's A, series: 1—Reid Pletcher. 2—Dave Harrison. 3—Darren Lightfield. 4—Sean McLaughlin. 5—Nate Campbell. 6—Eric Rector.

Women's, series: 1—Janelle Conners. 2—Sara Schroeder. 3—India Wysong.

Men's B, series: 1—Rory Lynch. 2—Herberth Corrales. 3—Steve Edsall.

Men's A, Race 5: 1—Reid Pletcher. 2—Dave Harrison. 3—Sean McLaughlin.

Women's, Race 5: 1—Rebecca Rusch. 2—Janelle Conners. 3—Brooke Hovey.

Men's B, Race 5: 1—Rory Lynch. 2—Herberth Corrales. 3—Steve Edsall.

First lap winners: 1—Janelle Conners and Dave Harrison. 2—Rebecca Rusch and Darren Lightfield. 3—Brooke Hovey and Reid Pletcher. Last place overall—Herberth Corrales.
