Bellevue Mayor Jon Anderson resigned from office last week, citing health and family issues. His resignation comes as he faces a DUI charge in Lincoln County.

In a brief letter of resignation submitted to the city on Thursday, June 24, Anderson said: "I regret to inform you that due to personal and family health issues, I am unable to devote the time needed to effectively fulfill my responsibilities of mayor. ... It has been an honor to work with such a dedicated staff and council. I wish everyone the best."

City Council Chair Chris Koch will take over Anderson's position until the November election.

Anderson did not respond to telephone calls from the Idaho Mountain Express by press time Tuesday.

Councilwoman Tammy Schofield said the mayor has been under the stress of taking care of his wife, Linda, who suffers from multiple sclerosis. She said he also has been traveling frequently to take care of his parents.

"One parent lives in Boise and the other lives in Pocatello. Jon is facing a hard time right now," Schofield said. "He has served the city of Bellevue well. The City Council and staff are still a team who represent the city as a whole, and we are still here to take care of business."

Anderson has been absent from council meetings for the past two months. Koch has been sitting in for him.

Anderson was charged with misdemeanor DUI in Lincoln County in May. He was convicted of the same offense in Blaine County in 2005.

Schofield said the council is aware of the charges, but said she did not think they relate directly to Anderson's resignation.

"His circumstances are not ours to judge," she said. "Besides, you can drink two glasses of wine at a 'business after hours' and get a DUI."

Anderson took office as mayor in 2005. He previously served as a city councilman.
