Day baseball camp coming to Hailey on Monday

Two weeks of fundamentals at Nelson Field

The two Wood River American Legion baseball teams are in the middle of their Area C "A" competitive seasons, but the program's big fundraiser is coming up—and it's an attractive one for young players.

Program director Matt Nelson has organized the Wood River Day Baseball Camp for boys and girls ages 9-13 over two weeks—Monday through Thursday, July 5-8 and July 12-15 from 9-11 a.m. each day at Hailey's Nelson Field.

Nelson said, "This is our big fundraiser for the year and I'd like as many kids as possible." Sponsor is Uhrig Fencing.

Cost is $100 per person for two weeks and 16 hours of work on baseball fundamentals. Nelson said, "Every child will be taught the correct way to play the game, the only way we know how: The Wolverine Way." Registration is taken on the first day of the camp.

Monday's instruction includes bunting, opposite field hitting and base running. On Tuesday, it's pitching, fielding from the mound and proper positioning for balls in play. On Wednesday, kids will enjoy hitting fundamentals. And on Thursday, it's skill evaluations and team selections.

Registration occurs from 8:30-9 a.m. Monday followed by introductions and breaking into groups. Nelson and his coaching staff hope some of the skills learned by the young players will translate into success in the Ray Nelson Little League tournament July 9-10.
