Vehicle burglaries plague Hailey

Police advise motorists to ‘lock your cars’

A rash of vehicle burglaries in Hailey this month has prompted police to remind people to lock their cars.

"We've had about 22 incidents the last few weeks where someone's going into unlocked cars and grabbing anything that's loose," Hailey Police Chief Jeff Gunter said. "It's been Woodside, it's been north, it's sprinkled throughout the neighborhoods."

Gunter described the thefts as "crimes of opportunity" and said the thief or thieves are mainly stealing electronic items such as iPods, digital cameras and portable DVD players. He said he suspects that the thefts are being accomplished by the same culprit or culprits.

"Any suspicious activity—call us and we'll investigate," Gunter said. "And please lock your cars—they're not being broken into—they're already unlocked."
