Film producer, resident Steve Reuther dies

Longtime Wood River Valley resident, producer and film executive Steve Reuther died Saturday, June 5, at his home in Santa Monica, Calif.

Reuther, who started his career in the mail room of the William Morris agency, produced and executive-produced more that 35 films in partnership with Arnon Milchan and Michael Douglas, including the 1990 box office hit "Pretty Woman," which launched the career of Julia Roberts.

Reuther had a string of successful films in the 1990s, including "Love Hurts," "The Mambo Kings," "The Power of One," "Under Siege," "Sommersby," "The Client," "Boys on the Side," "Face Off" and "The Rainmaker."

In 1998 he created Bel Air Pictures, a co-venture with Warner Brothers Studios and European Media and produced "Pay It Forward," "Proof of Life," "Sweet November," "Collateral Damage" and "The Ugly Truth."

Reuther was 58 years old and is survived by his daughter, Danielle Reuther, a film and arts major at New York University; his mother, Helen; his brothers, Mike and James; and his sister, Linda.
