Silver Creek relies on community

Memorial Day weekend was opening day of fishing for many places throughout Idaho, including the Silver Creek Preserve. It is always a great weekend on the preserve, even if it is raining and snowing.

This year we hosted more than 200 guests and fed about 60 of those at our opening day barbecue. Every year on opening day, I wake up in the middle of the night, look out the window and see cars parked at the access points before the sun has even come up. The energy and excitement is contagious.

The saying "it takes a village" has become a cliché, but nonetheless it rings true when running a preserve. It takes the interns who come from all across the country (and the families that sponsor them), the volunteers who stay for weeks at a time and run the visitor center, my husband who fixes equipment and irrigation, people like Dave Spaulding who come down at the drop of a hat when I call to fix the door on the outhouse, the birders who conduct monthly bird counts, and all the fishermen and visitors who bring with them their energy and enthusiasm for Silver Creek. I have never been in a job where I rely so much on other people—and I love it. It is a great feeling to be part of something that is truly a community project.

Thank you to all of you and see you on the creek.

Dayna Gross
