A Wood River Valley throw-together team called the Idaho Internationals won the Paul Scherer Invitational Men's Division 2 soccer tournament last weekend in Boise beating MCM F.C. in the finals 5-1.
The Wood River men went undefeated in the June 4-6 Southern Idaho Soccer League (SISL) Adult Invitational tourney beating Servigiros Inc. 8-0, Boise Blast 5-3, Ballyhoo F.C. 5-2 and finally MCM FC 5-1.
Ten players scored an impressive 23 goals led by Cole Casperson (5 goals), Cameron Lawler (5), Ciro Lima (3), Hector Lopez Sr. (3), Willie Silva (2) and one each for Spencer Flade, Hector Arias, Eric Hall, Adam Tanous and Charles Friedman.
Defensively, Idaho International Footballers allowed only six goals on the Ann Morrison Park fields last weekend.
Outstanding goal keeping by Hector Lopez Jr. (1 shutout) sparked the champs—helped by defenders Casey Finegan, Alex MacMillian, Ben Stahl, Chris Ward and Kenny Morrell.
It was a proud accomplishment for Idaho Internationals, a team that had been climbing the ladder for years. The team was formed four years ago from a group of men who play soccer at lunchtime in Ketchum.
The first two years the team did not win a game at the Boise tournament. Last year the tournament director created a Men's Division 2 and the competition was better suited for the lunch-timers as they placed second in the meet.
Steve Dondero, the team's energizer bunny, was injured in the first match but came back to play in the finals and was instrumental in controlling the mid-field helping the team to win with a 4-0 mark.
Team captain/organizer Kenny Morrell said, "Although the scores didn't show it, the last three games were hard fought and close but our guys kept battling and it paid off."
