Hailey resident Alba Arndt will celebrate her 100th birthday on Friday, June 4. Arndt lived at her Hailey home—which she still keeps—until only a few months ago, when she moved to the Blaine Manor skilled-nursing facility.

Arndt was a librarian for 10 years and a teacher in Hailey and other Blaine County schools for 20 years. In 2006, she was inducted into the Blaine County Heritage Court, which celebrates women who have contributed to the valley's rich history. She and her husband, Chester, moved to Hailey in 1946. The couple had been married in 1936 and spent 56 happy years together before Chester died in 1992 at age 87.

Advancing age, resulting in declining eyesight and hearing, has meant the loss of some of the things Arndt most loved in her younger years, including reading and playing the piano and organ. So, every Thursday a friend of Arndt's reads her the newspaper. Arndt is also a passionate Seattle Mariners fan.

The quote she adores most—from Colleen McCullough's novel "The Thorn Birds"—is, "You must accept change. You will be a better man."

Arndt said the quote has been with her ever since she read it.

Arndt will celebrate her birthday on Friday, June 4, at Blaine Manor in Hailey, which will be followed by a celebration at her home at 121 N. Third Ave. in Hailey from 12:30-2 p.m. The celebration will include a fire truck and a letter sent from Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter to be read along with a proclamation from Mayor Rick Davis.

Arndt will also have an open house on Saturday, June 5, from 1-4 p.m. at her home. Visitors for Ardnt's birthday celebration on Saturday have been asked to bring a flower from their garden.
