Event will benefit ill valley resident

Friends of Monica Van Wegen are hosting an informal fundraiser upstairs at Whiskey Jacques' in Ketchum on Thursday, June 3, at 7 p.m., to raise money to cover health-care costs. Van Wegen, a Wood River Valley resident and popular YMCA dance instructor, is in California undergoing treatment for a life-threatening illness.

Admission to the event is $15 at the door, which gets entrants beer for the evening, odds at winning prizes from Smith Optics and Eye Safety Systems and possibly some pizza. Additional donations will be accepted at the event; all donations of $250 or more are tax-deductible, thanks the Bald Mountain Fund, a 501c3. All proceeds from the event will be donated to Van Wegen via the Bald Mountain Fund.

Steve Mills elected to EDC Board

Steve Mills has been elected to the board of the Economic Development Corp. Mills replaces Bruce Jensen, who resigned last month. Mills joins the Economic Development Corp.'s 12 original board members as one of seven private-sector members.

Mills is CEO, a trustee and a director of Webb Landscape. He is a 20-year resident of Blaine County and past chair of the Wood River Economic Partnership. He has served on the Sustain Blaine advisory board since the group's inception in 2007.

Sustain Blaine is a coalition of citizens formed in 2007 to promote the region's quality of life and economic well-being. In 2009, Sustain Blaine unveiled the Go Blaine strategy to promote economic vitality throughout Blaine County. To implement the strategy, Sustain Blaine created the Economic Development Corp. early this year.

Funding for these efforts has been provided by Blaine County and its cities, as well as the Idaho Department of Commerce and numerous local businesses and nonprofit groups.

Night road work planned

Crews will perform night work on Sun Valley Road on Thursday, June 3, and Friday, June 4, to install pavement markings from Ketchum to Sun Valley.

The Idaho Transportation Department stated in a news release that crews will work from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sun Valley Road was designated for the work because paint markings have faded due to lots of traffic and harsh weather.

One lane will be closed. Drivers should watch for flaggers and be prepared for delays of as much as 10 minutes. A pilot car will be in operation during the lane closure.

Work may be delayed due to weather or temperatures below an acceptable standard.

CSI offers adult Spanish program

The Sun Valley Summer Spanish Institute will provide an opportunity for adults to develop Spanish language skills and broaden their knowledge of Spanish-speaking cultures. The daily schedule is Monday through Friday, June 14-18, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuition is $350.

The week will end with a community concert featuring José Conde and his Latin Groove band from New York City. The concert will be held at the historic Ezra Pound house in Hailey, and is co-sponsored by the Sun Valley Center for the Arts.

The program will include workshops on Mexican and Mexican-American cultures and building Latino alliances.

Fund created for car crash victim

Light on the Mountains Spirtual Center has set up a fund to help offset the cost of the funeral for the family of Ana Cecilia Gomez-Vega, who was killed in a car accident on May 25, the day before she was to graduate from high school in Shoshone. She was 18 years old.

Her mother, Maria Gomez, has worked in the valley for 15 years cleaning houses and washing windows.

The donations should be sent to Light on the Mountains Spirtual Center, Box 1195, Sun Valley, ID 83353 or call 727-1631. Checks should be noted "Ana Cecelia Gomez fund." Credit cards are also accepted.

Work starts on state Highway 24

A road preservation project on Idaho 24 east from Shoshone to the Milner-Gooding Canal is expected to be ongoing until June 18.

The Idaho Transportation Department announced that traffic on Idaho 24 will be reduced to one lane during work hours (7 a.m. to 5 p.m.) as crews perform work to overlay the existing roadway. Drivers should watch for flaggers and be prepared for delays of as much as 10 minutes. The speed limit will be reduced throughout the construction zone to 45 mph.

Weed spraying begins along bike path

The Blaine County Recreation District will apply herbicides along the Wood River Trail to control noxious weeds beginning today through Friday, June 4, in the early mornings.

The project will be rescheduled if the weather is bad.

The chemical is targeted at weeds; grasses are unaffected. However, people should keep pets out of sprayed areas for several days until the odor is gone. The Wood River Trail will not be closed; signs will be posted with treatment dates.

The district has also engaged Whitehead Landscaping to run a test program using its compost tea and beetles to control weeds. The test site extends along the east side of the path from the Hailey Cemetery road south for about a quarter mile.

Learn about shoulder problems

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Tony Buoncristiani will discuss shoulder anatomy and function, and the most common problems and interventions, during a Brown Bag lecture on Thursday, June 3, from 12:15-1:15 p.m. in the Baldy Conference Rooms at St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center, south of Ketchum.

All Brown Bag lectures are free and no pre-registration is required. Call St. Luke's Center for Community Health for information on this or other educational programs at 727-8733.

Free blood pressure checks offered

St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center will conduct free blood pressure checks at the Ketchum Post Office today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. No appointment is necessary.
