Drug use a community issue

I am writing to make an important correction to a radio ad for the recreation bond that aired last week.

First, let me be clear that I supported the recreation bond and am pleased that it passed. However, I was discouraged to hear the ad incorrectly reference a recent Blaine County Community Drug Coalition survey. The survey did not show that drugs are "abundant in our schools" as the ad claimed. It showed that Blaine County as a whole has a drug and alcohol problem.

For too long, I have heard adults refer to our youth substance abuse problem as a school issue. As a school social worker, the kids I talk with are, for the most part, too smart to bring drugs or alcohol to school. Why would they when they have plenty of unsupervised places, including homes in the community, to use as they please? Sadly, it's not uncommon for adults to provide these places and/or tacitly condone their use. Once we begin addressing youth substance abuse as a community issue, we will be one step closer to keeping our kids safe in our neighborhoods and our schools.
