CIEDRA would improve access

I want to commend Congressman Mike Simpson for including wheelchair access in his Central Idaho Economic Development and Recreation Act. People mistakenly think that wheelchairs are not allowed in wilderness areas—but this is not the case. Still, it is obviously difficult to traverse these places in one. Rep. Simpson's bill will not only give Idahoans 320,000 acres of new wilderness, but will also create the very first legislated primitive-access wheelchair trail in wilderness—the first mile of the Murdock Creek trail, right behind SNRA building north of town. Another will be just outside the wilderness boundaries, to Phyllis Lake in the White Clouds.

These two short trails will be a great resource for anyone with mobility limitations who wants to experience our majestic backcountry. I can't wait to roll along Murdock Creek, unassisted but for my dog, or to cast for trout on the quiet shore of Phyllis Lake. Hats off to Rep. Simpson for expanding local adaptive recreation opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
