Fishing Report

By BILL MASON

Memorial Day weekend and the official opening of fishing season passed pretty much as I expected. There was good news and bad news. As I predicted, a few of our rivers offered great angling success with nice hatches. On the other hand, runoff was held to a minimum and we actually increased water content and snowpack from a week ago, thus increasing our chances for future problems. As the weather warms and snow melts with each passing day, there could be runoff problems and ill timed hatches. It's anybody's guess. With cool weather predicted this week, here is what to expect.

SILVER CREEK—Fished very well with strong hatches of the larger PMDs, E dorthea infrequens and the smaller PMD, E excrucians (inermis). A few Beatis (Dephetor) were seen but big PMD was the main player. Parachute PMD #14-16, Cut-Wing PMD #16, Crippled PMD #14-16 and Flashback Pheasant Tail Nymph #14-16 readily took fish. Midges were also present and could be significant to success over the next few weeks. Partridge Spinner #16 (Callibeatis) should also be carried. June is always unpredictable but the fish will certainly get more selective as the month progresses. A strong showing of PMDs (keep your fingers crossed!) will certainly help.

BIG WOOD RIVER—High but clear and very fishable over the holiday. You had to pick your spots to wade and get around but fishing success was very strong. Based on weather reports, this week could be the same. Fishing underneath worked beautifully with big Stonefly Nymphs #6-8, Black and Black/Olive Wooly Buggers #6-10 and Green Drake Nymphs #10. It's still too early for surface activity. Regardless, you need to be careful with wading. From this point on, the Wood is day to day.

BIG LOST—It's hard to tell how much water the East Fork is carrying but I do think it's still a bit early for angling success. On the other hand, the irrigators have yet to call for water on the lower Lost and 195 cfs is a nice level to wade and fish. Will it hold at this level? That's anybody's guess. If it stays cool and rainy, however, it might be a good bet. Prince Nymphs #8-10 and Copper Johns #10-12 are always the flys of choice this time of year.

WARM SPRINGS/TRAIL CREEK—No real report on these, since the Wood fished so well. Both are clear but I would stay with the Wood as long as you can.

PENNY LAKE/LAKE CREEK—Heavily planted, fishing is very good and should remain that way for holdovers. Bait and flys are always successful but take only what you plan to use. Thanks.

SOUTH FORK OF THE BOISE—As luck would have it, they kicked up the water levels before the weekend. Not only did they kick it up, they ramped it up big-time to 1600 cfs. Now it is boat floating only with wade fishing nearly impossible unless you want to be picked up at the Cow Creek Bridge.
