Hamblin, Burton top pros at SV/Elkhorn Pro-Men’s

First resort golf tournament of the season

Mike Hamblin of Twin Falls and Kevin Burton of Boise, two of Idaho's leading mentors of young golfers, showed last week at Sun Valley and Elkhorn that they have plenty of shot-making ability left in their bags.

Hamblin, 50, and Burton, 48, finished 1-2 in the Professional Division of the 36-hole Sun Valley Resort/Elkhorn Golf Club Pro-Men's tournament held May 25-26. Hamblin shot a 142 for $688 and Burton was second at 145 for $573.

Third place among the pros went to recently retired Sun Valley Golf Course Director of Golf Doyle Corbett (71-75 for 146, $412). Corbett has been one of the biggest supporters of junior golf in the Wood River Valley over many years.

Finishing one shot out of the Professional money was Sun Valley golf pro Dom Conti (74-75 for 149).

Hamblin, general manager at Twin Falls Golf Club where he has been head pro since 1986, was named Rocky Mountain Section PGA Golf Professional of the Year in 2009. He has been the boys' and girls' golf coach at Twin Falls High School.

Elkhorn Golf Course is old stomping grounds for Hamblin. In 1982, Hamblin at age 22 became the first amateur to win the Idaho Open in the seven years it was held at Elkhorn starting in 1975. He has won the Idaho Open on four occasions.

Boise native and University of Idaho graduate Burton has been the Boise State University men's golf coach for five years. He is head pro at Boise's Plantation Country Club.

Winning the Pro-Am Team Division when the May 25-26 tourney was held on Sun Valley Golf Course was the locally-based team of Dom Conti, Scott Hailes, Chris Abbott and Kurt Funkhouser with 123 for $256.

Hailes won the Amateur/Gross title in the Championship Flight at Sun Valley with a 69 for $317, with Rick Filkins (76, $164) tied for third and Wood River High School senior Crockett Stearns (78) tied for sixth.

When the two-day tournament moved to Elkhorn Golf Course May 26, the team of Conti, Hailes, Abbott and Funkhouser tied for second place at 127, one shot back. In a sixth-place tie at 128 was the team of Sun Valley's PGA Director of Golf Jeff Petersen, Rob Hogan, Phil Doerflein and Walter Littenberg.

Littenberg (75) ended up fifth in the Amateur/Gross Championship Flight at Elkhorn and Doerflein (65, $302) tied for first place in the Amateur/Net totals at Elkhorn.
