Taylor comes on strong in district rodeo finals

Gooding contest finalizes state rodeo roster

Wood River High School sophomore Haillie Taylor finished very strong last weekend during the Fifth District High School rodeo finals in Gooding and qualified in four events for state competition at Pocatello.

Girls' cow cutting season champion Taylor amassed 66 points during the May 28-29 Gooding district finale and moved into third place in the final girls' season standings with 244 points. It was her best effort of the five-event season.

Taylor ended up with second-place season finishes in both barrel racing and pole bending, and a sixth in goat tying—all state qualifying results. She just missed in breaking roping although Taylor did well in that event at Gooding.

In Friday's first go, Taylor clocked a second-place 5.780-second time in breakaway roping. She was third and second in the barrel racing gos at 18.522 and 18.167 seconds, plus two fourths in goat tying at 10.270 and 10.120 seconds. Taylor added a 21.632-second time in pole bending for second.

For the weekend, Taylor showed the versatility that helped her to the Fifth District season title as a freshman by piling up 17 points in barrels, 14 in breakaway and goats, 15 in poles and six in team roping.

The only cowpoke who equaled Taylor's showing in the Gooding district finale was Dietrich's Kolton Hubert, whose 66-point weekend enabled him to overtake Wendell's Garrett Webb for the boys' all-around title, 183-173.

Jerome's Valene Lickley and King Hill's Darby Fox each collected 58 points at Gooding to cement their 1-2 spots in girls' all-around—Lickley with 298 points and Fox with 272.

Cowboys claimed season championships Saturday at Gooding. Unchallenged all spring in bareback riding, Dietrich's Hubert had 60-point and 53-point rides to finish up with 60 points in the event.

Dietrich's Whit Bingham captured the saddle bronc title with 50 points. The bullriding championship went to Shoshone's Justin Santana with 39.5 points including a 71-point ride Friday. Richfield's Jesse Robinson had a 77-point finish in Saturday's finale.

Wendell's Garrett Webb won calf roping going away with 96 points. Webb won the first go-round at 16.940 seconds in Gooding. Kade Gill of Gooding took Saturday's event at 15.270.

Lickley and Webb rallied into the team roping title with 68 points. They finished second in Friday's first go-round at 18.580 and fourth on Saturday with a 13.910-second ride.

State rodeo is June 13-20 in Pocatello. The top six cowboys and cowgirls in the final season standings earned state trips.
